Overview
For Janet Hill and her husband, their home in Chertsey has been a special place for over 33 years. However, following a serious illness approximately three years ago, Janet’s husband underwent a lower-leg amputation, creating new challenges with everyday activities, particularly when showering.
Although the couple already had a walk-in shower, the existing cubicle was relatively small and no longer provided the space or accessibility he needed.
Janet and her husband wanted a more spacious, comfortable showering area that would help him feel safer and more independent, while reducing the need for Janet to assist throughout his showering routine.
After discussing their requirements, AJT Showers Ltd designed a solution around the practical challenges they were experiencing, incorporating a larger walk-in shower, fixed shower seat, grab rails and more accessible shower controls.
The aim was to create a bathroom that better suited their circumstances and made everyday showering simpler, safer and more comfortable.
What Peter was looking for:
-
A larger, more spacious walk-in shower
-
A secure, fixed shower seat instead of a freestanding stool
-
Grab rails for additional support and stability
-
Shower controls that could be reached more easily while seated
-
Greater independence and less need for assistance during showering
Property Assessment & Design Considerations
Janet’s existing shower cubicle presented several practical challenges. The limited space meant her husband needed to bring a separate shower stool into the enclosure, leaving little room to move comfortably.
There was also an unexpected difficulty involving his prosthetic leg. Janet explained that he would sometimes leave it outside the shower enclosure, where it had occasionally fallen against the shower door and prevented him from opening it.
This meant Janet needed to remain nearby in case he required assistance.
It was clear that simply replacing the existing shower cubicle would not be enough. The new showering area needed to reflect how Janet’s husband actually used the space and address the difficulties he faced every day.
The refurbishment included:
-
A longer shower tray to create a more spacious showering area
-
A walk-in shower with additional room to move comfortably
-
A securely fitted, wall-mounted shower seat
-
Grab rails to provide additional support
-
Repositioned shower controls for easier access while seated
The new layout also allowed Janet’s husband to keep his prosthetic leg within reach inside the showering area, rather than having to leave it outside the enclosure.
By considering these practical details during the design stage, we were able to create a showering space that better supported his comfort, safety and independence.
A carefully planned accessible bathroom transformation, completed in just eight days.

Throughout the project, our experienced installation team focused on creating a practical, comfortable showering environment that addressed the difficulties the couple had been experiencing.
